All around the world, people experience hair loss, be it in men or women. Although, it is observed to be more common in men as male-pattern baldness. Experiencing hair loss can be difficult. It may result in a loss of confidence and stress. Hair loss can occur in your scalp only or your entire body. There are different causes of hair loss which may determine whether the hair loss you are experiencing is permanent or temporary. These causes can be medical conditions, hormonal changes, heredity, ageing, and more. The good thing is, hair loss can be treated. There are different types of treatment. One of these is using minoxidil.
What is Minoxidil?
Minoxidil, a topical medication, is scientifically proven to reduce hair loss, improve hair growth, and ain in regrowing hair for men with male-pattern baldness. It is applied to the scalp to stimulate the desired hair growth for women or men. More so, it also helps in increasing the thickness and density of hair. It works on the entire scalp which means it also promotes hair growth in the hairline. Contrary to the misconception that minoxidil only works on the crown and scalp, it can be used by men and women experiencing receding hairlines.
How does it work?
Minoxidil can be found on the shelves as a spray, liquid scalp drops, or foam in 2% or 5% formulations. It works by dilating the blood vessels as it is a vasodilator. By dilating the blood vessels, it improves the blood flow to different areas of your body. In addition to minoxidil influencing the blood flow, it also supplies your hair follicles nutrient-rich blood. It is a topical medication so when it is applied as a foam or serum, it starts interacting with the scalp sulfotransferase. This scalp sulfotransferase is then converted into minoxidil sulfate which is minoxidil’s active form.
After the conversion, the phase where your hair rests and begins the process of falling out, which is called the telogen phase, is shortened and is forced to move into the next phase which is the growth phase, hair regeneration phase, or the anagen phase. Not only is it pushed into the anagen phase, but minoxidil also extends this hair growth period and enhances hair diameter and hair follicle size. This results in longer and thicker hair.
Studies have proven the effectiveness of minoxidil in improving scalp coverage in around 60% of men. It was first discovered to aid in hypertension or blood pressure treatment since it dilates blood vessels. Scientists, later on, observed a side effect of minoxidil which is hair growth all over the body.
With this observation, scientists noted minoxidil’s potential in being a solution for hair loss and worked on the formula leading to a topical version that worked effectively.
It may take 3 to 6 months before you see the positive effects since hair follicle regeneration takes time. However, if you are consistent, you will be able to enjoy lustrous hair in the long run.
